Marios Demenagas, Operations Manager Shore Excursions New York
What makes you a local?
I was born here and I can remember when I was younger going to all of the street festivals with my family – every weekend it would be another nationality celebrating their culture and food. I live in Brooklyn now, more specifically Bay Ridge, where my family have lived for generations and we have lots of local connections – friends that are restaurant owners or manage venues. I did live in Greece for many years, but I do consider myself a local and I am back now enjoying the best the city has to offer.
What do you love about New York City?
You can get that home-town feel in a big city. The energy is also incredible – it is the city that never sleeps and is so vibrant; a hub of cultural diversity, where you can find food from every culture and entertainment for every taste. The views are also spectacular and I am still in awe of the New York City skyline at night. New York City is known as the “Capital of the World”, somewhere everyone wants to visit and I get to live here.
Any local recommendations?
So many things, but these are a must:
- Amazing View: Go to the One World Observatory – it’s the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and has panoramic views of New York City’s most iconic sites.
- Street Food: You have to get a slice of New York Pizza or have a Nathans hot dog on Coney Island.
- Times Square & Broadway: OK, it is not exactly a local insight, but you can’t visit New York without seeing the bright lights!
What do you enjoy about working for Intercruises?
It’s my job to show you all the best New York City has to offer – I love this city and love sharing it with visitors. Also, it is quite unique to have a workplace that is the backdrop for movie scenes, which is the case with the Manhattan Cruise Terminal and additionally many of our tour guides are also actors or extras in the entertainment industry – just the other night I saw one of our tour guides on the television show Blind Spot.
In this job you can never get bored and it is great to do something new every day and to meet people from all over the world. We have a great team, great suppliers and take great pride in our work and I would say we provide a remarkable level of service.
Have you developed any new and innovative products recently?
We do a private Harlem tour where knowledgeable guides lead small groups, reflecting on how it has changed, which is followed by brunch with a live local DJ.
We have also worked with the 9/11 Tribute Center to offer guests a chance to understand the full impact of what happened through stories of 9/11 as told by a person who experienced the horrendous attack first-hand – a New York resident, first responder, volunteer in recovery efforts, family member of a lost loved one or an actual survivor. A unique experience during a poignant visit.
We are also working on lots of new Wellness experiences for people to enjoy the natural areas in the city, such as Central Park Power-Walking, where guests see the best of one of the world’s most famous parks at a heart pumping speed.
